Masonry Testing 101

Proper testing of masonry products is essential to ensure that materials meet project requirements. There are many mistakes that can be made during product testing, and most of these mistakes can lead to jobs being delayed or stopped, and usually require costly follow-up to determine if there are problems with the resulting construction. Proper testing procedures for masonry products will be covered here, and typical mistakes made will also be presented.

Speaker Bios: Nicholas R. Lang, P.E. represents the National Concrete Masonry Association as its Director of Research and Development. In this capacity, he manages various projects for the Association, especially in areas of energy efficiency and sustainability. He also handles technical inquiries, provides oversight to the NCMA Research and Development Laboratory, assists with NCMA technical publications, and participates as staff liaison to NCMA task groups and subcommittees. Mr. Lang previously was the Manager of NCMA’s Research and Development Laboratory.
Lang previously worked with ASTM International’s Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory, where, as a laboratory inspector, he traveled to testing laboratories and inspected their equipment, testing procedures, and quality manual documentation. He is a member of ASTM International Technical Committees C09 on concrete and concrete aggregates, C12 on mortars and grouts for unit masonry, and C15 on manufactured masonry units. He is the subcommittee chairman for C15.03 on Concrete Masonry Units. He is Chairman of TMS’s Certification Committee.
